The need for preserving all of our nation’s history has never been greater, we’re counting on you! HBCUI (Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship) is a 10-week internship experience brought to you by Greening Youth Foundation in partnership with the U.S. National Park Service. As a part of HBCUI, students from schools around the country are putting their unique skills and talents to work in preserving the contributions of African Americans to our nation’s history and culture. Participants gain real world, on-the-job experience as they explore federal careers in the U.S. National Park Service.
Position Title: Public Affairs Intern

The Southeast Region Office of Communications and Legislative Affairs helps national parks and programs in nine states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands articulate the National Park Service mission, practices and activities while enhancing relationships with various publics through effective use of communications and public engagement strategies. The intern will support these efforts by assisting with internal/external communications, Congressional Affairs, correspondence and/or Freedom of Information Act processing.
The intern will help with communications initiatives and public engagement activities that connect various publics with national parks across the Southeast region through print, broadcast, and digital media. S/he will gain practical experience conducting research; brainstorming communication/engagement strategies, developing and implementing communication plans; producing written products (media materials, social media posts, graphic designs, articles, legislative material, letters, web content, etc.); evaluating program outcomes; organizing special events; and fielding requests and inquiries, as appropriate. S/he will provide assistance in the processing of Freedom of Information Act requests and in coordinating responses to letters from Congress and the public. The intern may have multiple opportunities to interact with employees and volunteers, agency managers and executives,
attorneys, media representatives, Congressional offices, partnering organizations, and members of the public.
The intern will receive hands-on guidance in the development of strategic communications plans, media and/or agency-based Congressional materials, and official correspondence. Through content submissions, the intern will receive training on how to write for the web and for public consumption through news outlets. The intern will also gain experience interacting with Congressional offices and Freedom of Information Act requestors.
The intern should have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. S/he should have had college-level coursework in writing, journalism, public relations, public policy, public administration, psychology, sociology, marketing, law or related areas. Successful candidates will have experience preparing, writing, and/or editing written material, especially knowledge/skills related to developing news releases, business letters, legal opinions, or marketing/social media content. S/he should have the desire and/or ability to work as part of a team to brainstorm and develop outreach materials and achieve common goals, and the ability to cooperate with and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, partners, the media, and the public.
Experience with graphic design, multimedia creation, or law is a plus. Candidates should have a degree or be pursuing studies in Journalism, Communications/Public Relations, Marketing, Public Administration, Law, Social Sciences, Project Management or related fields.
Must be currently enrolled in an accredited HBCU institution
Must be between 18 and 35 years of age
Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
Must be able to pass a federal background check
This work will primarily be in the office. When there is an opportunity for the intern to go out with other public affairs staff for an event these opportunities are normally in the local Atlanta area. Interns may have opportunities to visit local national parks for an introduction to park operations.
The office is accessible to public transportation systems. The intern will be required to have a personal vehicle or a valid state driver’s license in order to operate government vehicles while conducting official government business.
Compensation and Benefits:
Compensation is at a rate of $10 per hour, 40 hours per week.
Park housing is not provided.
