The need for preserving all of our nation's history has never been greater, we're counting on you! HBCUI (Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship) is a 10-week summer experience brought to you by Greening Youth Foundation in partnership with the U.S. National Park Service. As a part of HBCUI, students from schools around the country are putting their unique skills and talents to work in preserving the contributions of African Americans to our nation's history and culture. Participants gain real-world, on-the-job experience as they explore federal careers in the U.S. National Park Service.
Position Title: Interpreter/Historian Intern
NPS Unit Name: Vicksburg National Military Park – Vicksburg, MS
Position Description: Historian/Interpreter will research and present programs about the role of the United States Colored Troops (USCT) who occupied Vicksburg during Reconstruction following the end of the Civil War. The intern will present interpretive programs on their research both in the park and in the community. As part of their interpretive duties, the intern will be exposed to living history and given opportunities to experiment with 3rd person interpretation of USCT. The research will be packaged for future employees to use, and the intern will work with park staff to add their research to the park website and help design a temporary display highlighting their scholarly findings.
Learning Goals: Intern will learn research techniques, how to synthesize research for other to use, interpretation skills, living history skills, public speaking skills, and will learn about the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the role of the USCT in the south following the Civil War.
Qualifications: Educational major in History or related field (anthropology, American Studies, Museum Studies…) Skills in research and public speaking are desired.
Work Environment: Work will be done mostly in an indoor setting. When presenting programs, the intern can expect to be in the field for upwards of 2 hours at a time.
Vehicle/License Requirement: Valid driver's license is required. A personal vehicle is not required, but the housing and park are not served by public transportation, and getting groceries would be difficult without a car.
